Ashutosh Kumar, another Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student who is among the five students charged with sedition, was questioned by Delhi Police after he responded to a summon and joined the probe on Saturday.

While the police custody of Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya was extended by two more days, JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar’s security was enhanced at Tihar Jail.Kumar’s security was reviewed following intelligence reports that he could be attacked inside the prison. Last week, he had sustained minor injuries after being attacked by lawyers at Patiala House Courts Complex. Sources said Kumar was kept alone in a cell in jail number four and monitored by CCTV cameras.

The custodial duties are being performed by the jail staff while security is taken care of by Tamil Nadu Special Police, Indo Tibetan Border Police Force and Central Reserve Police Force. Delhi Armed Police handles escorting to police station, court and hospital. “Kumar is also being monitored by a resident medical officer,” the source added.

Two other JNU students — Rama Naga and Ananth Prakash — are also expected to join the investigation. They have told the media that police have not summoned them yet.

Police said Ashutosh was summoned after he was seen in a footage of the “anti-national” event at JNU on February 9. At about 10 am on Saturday, Ashutosh appeared at R K Puram police station where Khalid and Anirban were also being interrogated.

All India Students’ Association (AISA) national president Sucheta De said Ashutosh along with Rama Naga and Ananth were always willing to join the probe.
