Timeline | Major Naxal attacks in Maharashtra

In the wake of a deadly landmine attack on C-60 force in Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra on Wednesday, that killed 15 jawans and a civilian driver, Deccan Herald looks at major Naxal attacks in the state since 2009.

February 1, 2009: A police patrol of 15 men were killed in the Morke village in an ambush in Dhanora taluka.

May 21, 2009: Naxalites ambushed as many as 16 police personnel including four women in Murum village in Dhanora taluka. Deceased included five lady constables.

October 8, 2009: 17 policemen were killed near Laheri in Bhamragad taluka during an over three-hour gun-battle. Some of the cops were from the elite C-60, the commando unit of ANO. The deceased include an Inspector.

October 4, 2010: Four policemen and security personnel were killed in a Maoist attack in an explosion triggered by a landmine near the Pirimili village in Aheri taluka in Gadchiroli district.

October 8, 2010: Five persons, including three children, were killed and 10 others -- all students -- injured when the Maoists hurled grenades at a school at Sawargaon village in Gadchiroli district.

May 5, 2011: Six persons were killed and four others were injured in Gadchiroli after outlawed Maoists triggered a landmine in the Dhanora tehsil. The victims were from a marriage party, who were on their way from Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh to Chandrapur district – and were crossing Gadchiroli.

May 19, 2011: In two separate incidents of Naxal attacks on patrol parties, four police personnel were killed and two others injured in Bhamragad taluka of Gadchiroli district. These incidents took place at Bejurphata located on the Bhamragad-Tadgaon road and Nargonda area – both located in a distance of 25 to 30 km.

August 8, 2011: Two jawans were injured when a group of Naxals opened fire on a police party in Gadchiroli. The police were accompanying members of the Child and Women Rights Commission, who were returning to the district headquarters after a function.

August 20, 2011: Three policemen, including two personnel of Cobra battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), were killed in a Naxal attack in Gadchiroli. The encounter took place in Makadchua village in Potegaon in Gadchiroli taluka of the district this morning.

March 27, 2012: 12 members of an elite combat team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed and 28 others injured when the bus in which they were travelling for patrol duties was blown off after Maoists triggered a landmine in the Dhanora tehsil. The contingent of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) were travelling in a convoy.
