TN Assembly passes resolution against Dam Safety Bill

A view of the Tamil Nadu Legislature at Fort St George, Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday passed a unanimous resolution asking the Centre to "keep in abeyance" the controversial Dam Safety Bill till all states arrive at a consensus on the issue.

The resolution moved by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami was passed in the Assembly with support from members of the Opposition DMK, Cong and IUML. The resolution highlighted possible "problems" that could crop up over the operation and maintenance of dams by Tamil Nadu located in other states.

The Bill seeks to constitute a national committee on dam safety which shall evolve safety policies and recommend necessary regulations and provides for the establishment of a National Dam Safety Authority as a regulatory body.

In certain cases, such as dams of one state falling under the territory of another, the authority shall also perform the role of State Dam Safety Organisation, thereby eliminating potential causes for inter-state conflicts.
