Last Updated 07 December 2010, 19:20 IST

Cigarettes, generally sold in paper packs, are out of the ambit of this ban.

“The gutka and pan masala manufacturers are restrained from using plastic material from March 1, 2011,’’ a bench  comprising Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly said.

Listing the matter for further hearing on March 9, 2011, the apex court also directed the Centre to implement the provisions of Plastics (Manufacturer, Usage and Waste Management) Rules, 2009, on banning non-biodegradable and recycled plastic bags in eight weeks.
