JOIN USThe Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal has swept the polls held in three municipalities even as the opposition termed the election process as “farce”.
Although the TMC isn’t complaining despite facing serious criticism since the violence of October 3, the moment of jubilation may not last long if the Calcutta High Court decides to countermand the whole process as part of an ongoing hearing.
Controversies
The ruling party faced serious flak after news channel footages on October 3 showed workers assaulting voters, journalists and capturing booths across Bidhannagar, Asansol and Bally.
Eleven booths in the first two municipalities underwent re-election on Friday but the opposition parties boycotted the process and hardly any voters turned up. The state government ran into further controversy after Sushanta Upadhyay resigned as the state election commissioner, reportedly under the TMC’s pressure, and state Transport Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay replaced him as the interim State Election Commission (SEC) chief.
