Trinamool to answer whether it can run a govt: M K Narayanan

Questioning the sudden removal of Kolkata Police chief R K Pachnanda, Governor M K Narayanan tonight said the ruling Trinamool Congress has to answer whether it is capable of running a government.

"I don't know the reason why the CP has been removed. But if it has something to do with what has happened in the last few days, I think this is something that will have to be looked at very carefully," Narayanan told reporters.

"Clearly there is something that is wrong and we will have to look into it," he said.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today removed Pachnanda two days after a police sub-inspector was shot dead, expressing unhappiness that some of those involved in the incident were not arrested.

The action came hours after the Governor resented the alleged bid by Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim to shield a Trinamool councillor, who was named in the FIR lodged in connection with the incident.

When asked whether the state government was not able to perform its duties properly, Narayanan said, "We have an elected government and the government is elected with a massive mandate. I presume they should answer whether they are capable of running a government or not. The governor can't answer that, he can only act."

When asked whether he would intervene following the recent violence in the city and other parts of the state, Narayanan said, "That you leave to me."
