Venugopal opts out of LS polls

New Delhi, dhns: Congress president Rahul Gandhi's trusted aide and AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal on Sunday said he has opted out of the Lok Sabha elections on account of his organisational responsibilities, including in Karnataka.

A member of the Lok Sabha from Alappuzha in Kerala, Venugopal said he had conveyed to the party leadership in the state about his inability to seek re-election on account of his organisational responsibilities.

Venugopal is the AICC General Secretary in-charge of the organisation and plays a key role in finalising party candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, planning the strategy and ensuring its timely execution.

In addition, Venugopal is also tasked with overseeing the Congress activities in Karnataka.

“It is my responsibility to do my duty for the party. Also, I am in charge of (party affairs in) Karnataka,” he said.

“Contesting polls in Alappuzha by sitting in Delhi will be an injustice to my voters. I am personally interested in contesting elections but the party's interests are supreme. In this context, there are practical difficulties for me to contesting from Alappuzha,” he told reporters here.

Venugopal said he had conveyed his decision to Kerala Congress president Mullappally Ramachandran, AICC General Secretary Oommen Chandy and Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala.

Venugopal was appointed AICC General Secretary (Organisation) in January to succeed Ashok Gehlot who had taken over as the Rajasthan chief minister.
