Mallya extradition: London court verdict on Dec 10

Last Updated 05 December 2018, 04:45 IST

The next big date for Indian authorities on account of an extradition plea will be next Monday when a London court pronounces its verdict on New Delhi's request on liquor baron Vijay Mallya.

Wanted in a case of loan default that runs into over Rs 9,400 crore, the court had set December 10 as the date for pronouncing its verdict. The court had earlier reviewed a video of the cell in a Mumbai jail where Mallya might be lodged once he is extradited to ensure his safety.

However, this order will not be final as Mallya still has avenues to appeal. Once the Secretary of State takes a final call on the plea, Mallya has the right to appeal to higher judiciary, including the Supreme Court there, against the decision.

Government had in 2016 admitted that getting people extradited from the UK is an onerous task with continuation of death penalty in India and European Commission's provisions on human rights are acting as hurdles in acceding to these requests.

Mallya was arrested in April 2017 as part of the extradition process and was granted bail.
