Around 10% citizens may not be able to vote in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls due to voter ID card or booth information issue, says a new survey.

"Around 83% said they would vote with a voter id card or voter slip and 4% said they will not vote. 10% said they want to vote but have a voter ID card or booth information issue," says the survey conducted by Local Circles, a community social media platform.

The survey was conducted to determine the citizens' pulse on their preparedness for the general elections and exercising their right to vote.

Of the over 16,000 respondents who were Indian voters, 38% said that they were not able to find information regarding voting via Election Commission helplines, websites, apps or officials.

To a question on how the Election Commission should make the process of obtaining/modifying voter ID card faster and efficient, 62% said application should be online and card must be downloaded with Aadhaar authentication. 11% proposed online application, manual verification and online download, while 18% preferred establishing voter id creation centres in each district on the lines of Passport Seva Kendra. 8% said the process is already efficient, found the survey.

"According to the Election Commission of India, there will be around 8.4 crore first-time voters in this election. The number would be even higher if the smaller issues could be eradicated. Many citizens reported that they could not cast their votes either because they did not have a voter ID card or because their name was not there in the voter list," said the survey report.
