West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker passes away

The Deputy Speaker of West Bengal Assembly Haider Aziz Safwi passed away on Wednesday due to a cardiac arrest.

Safwi (73), a two time Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, breathed his last while he was being rushed to a private hospital in Salt Lake on the eastern fringes of Kolkata.

“Mr Haider Aziz Safwi, the deputy speaker of West Bengal state assembly was brought to AMRI Hospital, Salt Lake at around 10.45 am on Wednesday. He was taken to the emergency ward but doctors concluded that he had died from a cardiac arrest even before reaching the hospital. ECG was conducted on him and it showed a flat line on the monitor,” a statement issued by AMRI Hospital said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled Haider's death.

"I am deeply saddened to know that Haider Aziz Safwi, Deputy Speaker of West Bengal Legislative Assembly is no more " she tweeted.

"He was a very senior and respected person associated with us over a long time. His passing away is indeed a great loss, " she further tweeted.

Haider, a former IPS officer became an MLA twice from the Uluberia (East) Assembly constituency of Bengal in 2011 and 2016.

He was appointed as the deputy speaker of the state Assembly on June 23, 2016.

He had been the minister of inland water transport and correctional administration before being appointed as the deputy speaker.
