A 30-year-old woman who was stabbed by her suspected lover at the Cherai beach near Kochi died while she was being shifted to a hospital, on Friday. The deceased was identified as Sheetal, a resident of Varappuzha in Ernakulam district.

Police arrested Prashanth, a native of Nedumkunnam in Kottayam district, in connection with the incident. Sheetal and Prashanth were at the beach, a popular tourist spot, at about 10 am on Friday. The attack happened following an altercation, reports said.

According to eyewitness accounts, Sheetal sustained multiple stab injuries and was calling for help as she stumbled into a nearby resort. She died while employees at the resort and local residents were shifting her to a private hospital in Kochi. Prashanth, who tried to flee, was held by people at the beach and handed over to the police.

Police called the killing an act of vengeance in the wake of Prashanth's suspicion that Sheetal was in another relationship. “He lives in the upper floor of her house. They’ve been having trouble in their relationship for sometime and his suspicions about her appear to have led to the killing,” K B Praphulla Chandran, DySP, Aluva, said.
