Though ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ is a popular slogan these days, all those who come to hospitals say ‘Beta Chahiye’ (Need a Son), rued District Surgeon Dr Rajeshwari Devi H R.

Addressing students after inaugurating ‘Abhaya,’ a women’s forum at St Agnes PU College, she opined that it is very difficult to change certain aspects which are deep-rooted among Indians.

Stating that India is the 4th most dangerous country in the world for women, the district surgeon said that women have to face a lot of challenges to overcome the patriarchal system that exists in India.

Despite the tremendous progress achieved in every facet of life and despite the existence of several welfare schemes for women including the National Rural Health Mission and strict rules such as PNDT Act, India still has very low sex ratio and high mortality rate, she pointed out.

Regretting the rise in rape cases, she felt that delay in delivery of justice too is a cause for concern.

Meanwhile, Family Court Principal Judge Ravi M Naik, the chief guest, stressed the importance of teacher in every student’s life. “Teachers are role models, but there is no substitute for hard work. Students should avoid thoughts on fear and worry. Many students don’t lack intelligence, but they lack motivation,” said the judge.

Quoting Swami Vivekananda, he called upon students to take risk in life and appealed them not to waste time. “Every morning budget your time and audit the same at night,” he gave a piece of advice and added that student need to work at least 18 hours a day to achieve success.

Soon after the stage programme, the students staged a street play ‘Nukkad’ to spread awareness about the issues related to women and the importance gender equality.
