Landslides hit rail traffic; Karwar train terminated at Hassan

With heavy rains lashing the Malnad region, landslides have been reported on the rail route on the Sakleshpur-Subramanya stretch, between Kadagara Valli and Yedekumeri stations in Sakleshpur taluk, disrupting train services.

The tri-weekly Yeshwantpur-Karwar passenger train was stopped at the Hassan station, on Monday morning. Passengers were provided full refund of fare. Arrangements were made in Hassan for facilitating the onward journey of passengers by KSRTC buses.

The train services between Mangaluru and Yeshwantpur have been cancelled till further notice.

Speaking to DH, station master E Vijaykumar said, a team of workers is already clearing the route by removing the soil. However, the continous rain is affecting the work, he said.

The service of the Mangaluru Junction-Yeshwantpur tri-weekly Express, scheduled to leave Mangaluru Junction on June 11, was diverted to run via Kannur, Shoranur, Palakkad Junction, Coimbatore-Erode and Jolarpettai.

According to a press release from S G Yathish, PRO and divisional commercial manager, landslides and boulder slips have occurred at more than 10 places, obstructing railway traffic. An expert team of officers, including engineers, have rushed to the spot and restoration works are on, it said.
