Relief for airport land: meeting ends in logjam

Last Updated 17 July 2018, 17:32 IST

A meeting between the farmers and the district administration convened to discuss the compensation amount for 189 acres land, for the airport ended in a logjam here on Tuesday.

While the farmers demanded Rs 2 crore per acre and put forth more demands, the district administration was not ready to accept the deal, and the meeting ended with taking any decision.

Additional Deputy Commissioner B R Poornima left the venue saying that the complete details will be submitted to the higher officers.

Speaking to DH, Poornima said she interacted with the farmers on finalising the compensation amount for the 189 acres land. She conveyed the farmers that the authorities have fixed Rs 32 lakh per acre for the land at Sankenahalli and Boovanahalli and Rs 28 lakh for the land at Lakshmisagar, Tendahalli, G Mylanahalli and Dyavalapura villages. The prices were earlier fixed at Rs 28 and Rs 25 lakh respectively. Since the farmers were not ready to accept it, the prices were revised. As the farmers are not ready to accept the revised prices, no decision was taken in the meeting, she said.

KIADB Special Land Acquisition Officer Arul Kumar said around 466 acres were acquired in 1997 for the airport, at Rs 1 lakh per acre. In 2007, 1,057 acres were acquired at Rs 5 lakh per acre for IIT. A cargo airport in Hassan will give a boost to the industrial development and also bring IIT, engineering colleges and others to the district.

The airport work has been taken for the future of the district and people should extend their cooperation, he appealed.

The KIADB will not purchase land on gunta basis. It is not possible to give the compensation of Rs 2 crore being demanded by the farmers, he explained.

Advocate G Rangaswamy said a notice was issued on April 11, 2017, on the acquisition of 189 acres. Hence, the authorities should consider the market price of 2017 and not that of 2007, he said.
