Last Updated 14 July 2018, 18:19 IST

Sea erosion has intensified in Bettampady, in Ucchila, Peribail, Seeroad, Mukkachery and Someshwara.

The huge waves have started lashing the Ucchila-Ullal road as well. On a few stretches, electric poles and casurina trees (gaali mara) from the shores have been cleared.

According to the information available from the district administration, there is a red alert at the coast. Huge waves, up to 1.7-metre in height, are likely to hit the shore. Keeping this in mind, two excavators have been pressed to service on the spot. Boulders have been dumped near the areas where there are houses.

Probationary Assistant Commissioner Santhosh said, “The boulders will be dumped near the road as well. It is being done according to the suggestions of the engineers.”

Electric wires have been cut owing to the casurina trees. Due to the Ockhi cycle, 11 electricity poles were uprooted at Peribail, Ucchila, and were replaced with new poles. Now, the waves have started hitting the poles and maybe uprooted once again.

The Mescom officials have shifted four electric poles from the spot. At least 500 houses get electricity connections from the poles situated next to the shore.

The casurina trees situated on private lands were posing a hurdle to the electric poles. After the DC’s order, the trees that were posing a hindrance to the poles were cleared.

Aliyabba’s house that was damaged during the Ockhi cycle, was washed away due to the ferocity of the waves on Friday night. According to the revenue officials, since compensation was paid in the past, no one complained about the loss of the house.

Ullal CMC member Mohammed Mukkachery said that waves have lashed at over 50 houses in the region.
