Now, demand for Puttur district gets louder

Last Updated 15 December 2018, 14:14 IST

Members of various organisations have demanded the formation of a new district with Puttur as its headquarters.

The demand became louder with a preparatory meeting convened to decide on the formation of a Horata Samithi (agitation committee) on Sunday.

Puttur MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor inaugurated the programme. Former MLA Shakuntala Shetty, entrepreneur Ashok Kumar Rai Kodimbadi, Puttur Bar Association president Bhaskar Gowda Kodimbala, Senior Advocate Rammohan Rao and others were present.

The particiapnts said that Puttur has all the qualification to become a district headquarter. There is a need to take up an apolitical movement to realise the dream. There is a need to carry out a campaign by including members of all castes, creed, religion and organisations.

During the British rule, Puttur had covered a vast area. Parts of Kasargod, Sullia, Puttur, Belthangady and Bantwal were part of Puttur taluk. Over a period of time, new taluks were created and none took any initiative to accord district status to Puttur, said participants.

Further, they said Mangaluru has grown and Commissionerate was created. The people from rural taluks find it difficult to visit Mangaluru for any administrative works. Hence, district status should be accorded to Puttur.

Puttur district should be carved by including Sullia, Puttur, Kadaba, Belthangady taluks and Vittal of Bantwal taluk, participants said.
