NEET Cancelled | The exam that broke Indian parents

For millions of Indian parents, the most intimidating room in the house is no longer the operation theatre, the police station, or the courtroom. It is the child’s study room in the weeks before an entrance examination.

Behind every NEET or JEE aspirant sits an entire family carrying the weight of one national obsession: merit. More than 24 lakh students register annually for NEET-UG, while JEE Main attracts over 14 lakh candidates across sessions. These are not merely examinations anymore. They are high-pressure elimination systems that determine access to opportunity for millions of Indian households.

Public conversations often describe this as aspiration or demographic ambition. Parents know it differently. They know it as sacrifice.

In many homes, preparation for these examinations begins years before Class 11. Childhood itself is reorganised around entrance tests. Twelve-year-olds discuss cut-offs and coaching modules. Teenagers follow schedules that resemble corporate shifts more than school life. Dining tables become planning rooms. Family holidays disappear. Even ordinary conversations begin revolving around ranks, mock tests, and admission probabilities.

Across India, families quietly restructure their lives around this system. Land is sold to pay coaching fees. Gold is mortgaged. Parents relocate children to coaching hubs like Kota, Hyderabad, Delhi or Pune. Mothers move into rented apartments near institutes while fathers continue working in distant cities to support the arrangement financially.

What keeps this ecosystem functioning is not simply ambition. It is trust. Parents tolerate the emotional and financial burden because they believe the examination itself will remain fair. That belief is now under serious strain.

The NEET controversy that erupted nationally in 2024 should have forced structural reform. Instead, reports emerging again in 2026 suggest that examination leak networks remain active. Investigators in Rajasthan reportedly uncovered ‘guess papers’ matching more than 100 actual NEET questions, allegedly sold through organised channels. The anger this generates cannot be dismissed as routine public outrage over corruption. Corruption, unfortunately, no longer surprises Indian families. The deeper injury is the sense of betrayal.

Because for every leaked paper, there are lakhs of students who prepared honestly. Students who studied late into the night during power cuts. Students who missed weddings, birthdays, and festivals. Students who learned to measure their value through marks because the system encouraged exactly that behaviour.

Parents witness this pressure every day. They watch teenagers sleep four hours a night before examinations. They watch WhatsApp groups circulate rumours about leaks and revised cut-offs at midnight. They watch children break down after scoring marks that would once have been considered extraordinary.

Then comes the most damaging part of all: uncertainty over the credibility of the examination itself. When exams are cancelled, delayed, or publicly compromised, official language describes these events as procedural failures or irregularities. Inside homes, the experience feels far more personal. It feels like trust collapsing in real time.

The National Testing Agency was established to bring transparency, standardisation and efficiency to India’s entrance examination system. Yet repeated controversies have steadily weakened confidence in its ability to conduct secure examinations at scale. After the public outrage following the 2024 NEET crisis, a reform panel headed by K Radhakrishnan reportedly recommended major changes to strengthen examination security and governance. Reports now indicate that several critical reforms remain pending even in 2026.

This raises legitimate questions that cannot be managed through press conferences.

If India can operate digital payment systems handling billions of secure transactions, launch complex space missions, and position itself as a global technology leader, why does it repeatedly struggle to conduct secure examinations for students?

Why does every examination season now arrive alongside rumours of paper leaks, impersonation rackets, and compromised centres? Why are parents forced to reassure children not merely about preparation, but about whether the examination process itself can be trusted?

The emotional cost of this system is already severe. Kota recorded 26 student suicides in 2023 alone, drawing national attention to the mental health crisis surrounding competitive examinations and coaching culture. Despite repeated warnings, little appears to have fundamentally changed.

What worries many parents most today is not only the existence of corruption. It is the growing normalisation of it. A country cannot ask children to dedicate years of discipline, sacrifice, and emotional endurance while failing to guarantee the integrity of the examination itself. Competitive examinations will always create pressure. But the system becomes morally indefensible when honest students begin believing that honesty may not be enough. That is the danger India now faces.

What we have is not simply a crisis of examination management, but a slow erosion of faith among families who have invested everything in the promise of fairness.
