Advantage AAP in New Delhi

Advantage AAP in New Delhi

Sir,

So far Narendra Modi had a dream run in the assembly elections held in five states. Now for the first time Modi is facing a formidable challenge from the fledgling AAP in Delhi assembly elections with the surveys confirming that it would be a neck to neck race between the two parties with congress remaining irrelevant. The fact that heavy weights of BJP are pressed to campaign for BJP confirms the contention of AAP that the ruling party is really nervous. If AAP wins absolute majority in the elections, it may set in motion a dent in the popularity of Modi as the chief campaigner of BJP. The Election commission should ensure that money and muscle power are curbed and the elections are conducted in free and transparent manner.

World Cup: Australia ahead of the rest

Sir, With less than two weeks to go for the World Cup and with their emphatic win the Tri series final  Australia are ahead of the rest.  The current champions are still a confused, lost team whose leader quit test matches during "testing" times. The rest are in different stages of trying to "figure it out" and may never get there in time.

AAP embarrassed

Sir,

AVAM, an NGO, has exploded a bomb on the eve of elections to Delhi Assembly. It has revealed that AAP received donations amounting to Rs.2 crore by companies not existing. AAP's defence is not convincing. Kejriwal and his party members consider themselves highly principled. These donations are a huge embarrassment to Kejriwal and his party on the eve of elections.

Politicking over a trivial issue

Sir,

This refers to 'Row over Vala speech in Hindi' and 'Vala's Hindi speech causes discomfort to most legislators' (DH, Feb.3).  The hullabaloo over the Governor''s address to the joint session of the legislature in Hindi serves no purpose save politicising a trivial issue.  The protest by the activists of the Kannada organisations smacks of their linguistic chauvinism.

It is desirable that the Governor addresses the Karnataka legislators in Kannada which most of them understand in full.  But whether it is feasible is the question given the fact that he does not know Kannada at all.  Hence, ruling out this possibility, he was left with the choice between English and Hindi.  Since he is not as comfortable with English he has opted for Hindi.
