EU proposal on carbon tax not country specific: French envoy

When asked whether Indian exports to Europe would be subject to the proposed carbon tax, French Ambassador to India Jérôme Bonnafont said: "I have not read anywhere that we are targeting a specific country."

The proposal, mooted by European Commission, involves imposition of a tax on goods, which are made from processes not considered to be environment friendly. France is a leading member of the EU.

Environment Jairam Ramesh is reported to have said that India would contest any move to impose carbon tax by EU at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Ramesh has said that barriers like anti-emission tax would not be compatible with the WTO rules.

"There is a reflection on the possibility for Europe to have carbon tax for countries which will not commit themselves to fighting climate change. It means... who are not cooperating in...implementing the UN Convention on Climate Change and the protocols," he told reporters.

India exports merchandise worth around USD 40 billion to the 27-nation bloc, mostly garments, machines, chemicals, leather goods and handicraft.
