Sea, space core defence strategies: Akbar

Union Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar said that the security of the country is fundamental and sea and space will be the core of the defence strategies in the 21st century for India.

Delivering a talk on ‘India’s Foreign Policy in the 21st Century’, the minister said that security is essential for foreign policy. The recognition of strategic space and need for cooperation between the strategic spaces is required. The security in terms of land is a diminishing factor in the present day scenario. The sea and space above and below Ozone layer are gaining significance in terms of security strategies. It comprises of prolonged challenges in the next five to twenty years, regarding the creation of security architecture, he said.

India is the strength in terms of security and the economy. It is capable of influencing and to become influential in the world. Peace creates strength. A country with peace itself will be at peace with the world, he said.

He maintained that prosperity works better when shared. The world’s trust is in India, he added citing the example of UAE’s strategic reserves with India.

He said that Indo-China relations are taking a new turn. The country has sent clear messages to the world, including its immediate neighbours. India is a pivotal power in Asia which is enriched with good leadership and qualities like commitment to freedom, pluralism and well-defined security strategies, he concluded.
