Solar lamps for SSLC students in Madikeri

Last Updated 02 March 2019, 17:35 IST

Children of families rendered homeless due to floods and landslides continue to chase dreams and prepare for the examinations under the light of new solar lamps.

Among the many braving adversities since August, students, particularly those appearing for the SSLC examinations have refused to be disheartened by hardships.

Yet, despite their enduring spirits, frequent power cuts were seen as a major hindrance to their preparations. Following appeals from organisations like Habitat for Humanity India, Shell India decided to help these students overcome the challenge.

Thus, nearly 2,000 students in the tenth standard of government schools in Madikeri received solar lamps to continue their studies even after dusk.

Sources in the education department told DH that the solar lamps have been procured from D Light - a Shell Foundation funded company.

Developed with leading innovative technology, the solar lamps can be charged during the day and used up to 12 hours at low brightness, with three light settings. One of their key advanced features includes an ultra-flexible design with a 3600-light spread that provides enough brightness for two students.

The decision of the NGO and donors to help students with clean energy has come in for praise from all quarters.

Do not pay, display your hall ticket

The students appearing for their second PUC examinations, which has started from March 1, can now travel to their centres of examination free of cost by merely displaying their hall tickets in KSRTC buses.

“Students without bus pass can also travel free in KSRTC buses by showing their hall ticket,” said sources in KSRTC.
