Mother of Kerala scams

Last Updated 11 February 2012, 20:29 IST

The mother of all sex scandals in Kerala is the Ice cream parlour scandal that rocked the state in 1990s.

An ice cream parlour in Kozhikode was being used to run a sex racket. Influential people, including leader of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Industries minister of Kerala P K Kunhalikutty was allegedly among the abusers. But Kunhalikkutty’s name did not feature in the list of accused. The case was eventually dismissed by courts in Kerala. The case was reopened by police in 2011 following new revelations. However, recently the Special Investigation Team which probed the case anew cleared Kunhalikutty of the charges.

If Ice cream parlour case troubled IUML the most, an industrialist-MLA from Alappuzha district who is currently with Left Democratic Front, and a woman minister from CPI (M) were under a cloud of allegations in Kiliroor sex scandal of 2003. A native of Kiliroor in central Kerala, was sexually exploited by a gang who promised her roles in TV serials. The girl died at a hospital in 2004 after giving birth to a child. CBI, after investigation, dismissed allegations that high-profile politicians were involved.

Kerala’s former Forest minister and Janata Dal leader Neelalohitadas Nadar had to resign in 2000 following a complaint of attempted sexual abuse by a senior woman IAS officer.
