Asif, Kaneria help Pakistan level series

Last Updated 06 December 2009, 17:27 IST

New Zealand were always facing an uphill battle, chasing 404, on the fourth day of the second Test.

Paceman Asif, who picked up the first three New Zealand wickets on Saturday, chipped in with two more to complete his five-wicket haul as the Kiwis were shut out for 263.

Leg spinner Kaneria looked to be back in form after putting up an impressive performance to come up with figures of 3/74, picking up the crucial wicket of Brendon McCullum in the process.

The lone resistance came from Ross Taylor, who was unlucky to miss out on a deserved century falling to fast bowler Mohammed Aamer as he went for a drive outside the off stump but only managed to edge the ball to a gleeful Misbah-Ul-Haq when he was on 97.

After Taylor’s dismissal it was just a matter of time Pakistan wrap up the match and even though captain Daniel Vettori (40) and tailender Iain O’Brien (31) realised 40 runs for the ninth wicket, it came a tad late as the visitors went on to dismiss the Black Caps to complete a fine win.
