Federation Cup: Gurindervir Singh, Vishal T K, Tejaswin Shankar break national records

Bengaluru: In a historic day for Indian track and field, three national records were broken in men’s events of the National Athletics Federation Competition in Ranchi.

Gurindervir Singh (100m), Vishal T K (400m) and Tejaswin Shankar (decathlon) reached new heights in their respective events. 

While Gurindervir (clocked 10.09 seconds) and Tejaswin (8057 points) also qualified for the Commonwealth Games with their unprecedented efforts, Vishal became the first Indian to clock a sub-45 timing at 44.98 seconds in the quarter-mile event.

Gurindervir, in fact, raised the bar by several notches as the 25-year-old from Punjab improved the previous record of 10.15 (set on Friday by Animesh Kujur) while becoming the second-fastest Asian man this season as he trails Japan’s Fukuto Komuro (10.08).

Once the record time flashed on the screen, Gurindervir took off the bib number sheet to reveal the message he wrote before the race: “Task is not finished yet. Wait I am still standing. 10.10!”

The duo also qualified for the Commonwealth Games by breaching AFI’s entry standard of 10.16.

The men’s 400m final was a showdown between the two coaching factions of the Athletics Federation of India as Jamaican Jason Dawson-coached Vishal of Tamil Nadu dominated the field while putting a visible gap between him and coach Raj Mohan-trained Rajesh Ramesh (TN), who clocked 45.31 for a second-placed finish.

Vishal improved on his previous NR of 45.12 but missed out on the CWG qualification mark of 44.96. 

Tejaswin, meanwhile, became the first Indian to breach the 8000-point barrier, improving on his previous best of 7826 points (set in Poland last year) and also crossing the CWG’s direct qualification mark of 7787.

The athlete improved his personal bests in three track events, namely 10.77 seconds in 100m, 48.29 in 400m and 4:20.02 in 1500m. The 1500m result was crucial in reaching 8000 points as he had a poor outing in javelin throw at 47.71 metre (his PB in the event is 54.85), costing him points.
