Indian Athletics Series 6: Poovamma MR, Abhinaya Shetty claim top spots

Bengaluru: Karnataka’s elite 400M runner Poovamma MR clocked her season best (53.38 seconds) to top the women’s event at the Indian Athletics Series 6 in Chennai on Sunday.

The 35-year-old quarter-miler, representing ONGC, finished ahead of her state-mate Vijayakumari GK who clocked 53.58 secs to occupy the third position. The second position went to Police’s Ansa Babu (53.50).

The men’s 110M hurdles saw a continued rise of Karnataka athlete Krishik M who finished second in a photo finish with national record holder Tejas Shirse. Krishik improved on his previous best (13.72) to a new personal best of 13.44, finishing right behind Tejas (13.43). While Krishik clocked the third fastest timing by an Indian, the record stands at 13.41.

Meanwhile another state athlete Abhinaya Shetty (JSW) made the most out of the depleted field to win the women’s high jump event at 1.71 metre. The same was true for javelin thrower Karishma Sanil (Reliance) as she hurled the javelin to 53.03m to take the top spot while her state-mate Ramyashree Jain finished third at 46.41.

Mid-distance runner Priyanka C finished runner-up in the women's 1500m while clocking a new personal best of 4:23.10 behind Haryana's Anju (4:19.39). The Karnataka runner shaved off her previous best by more than 10 seconds, which came at the inaugural National Indoor Championships last March.
