Bengaluru: Having missed out on their third consecutive World Test Championship final appearance, India begin their quest for the Test mace under a captain short on leadership experience and runs in overseas conditions.
.
Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra, however, threw his weight behind Shubman Gill's leadership abilities, stating that he is very mature for his age.
.
“He (Shubman Gill) is a quick learner. He is very keen to learn all the time. There is no doubt about his abilities as a captain,” Ashish Nehra told DH in an interaction arranged by Sony Sports Network.
.
The 46-year-old also backed India's fast bowling group to be their biggest strength in the five-match Test series starting in Leeds on Friday.
.I won't think I am the captain when I get out to bat: Gill.
“These players have been to England before and they know how to play and pick wickets. There are also experienced bowlers in Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj who know what the conditions will be. With the kind of pace attack India have, if there are no injuries, I would say this will be India's strength."
.
Siraj, who has been putting in overtime shifts over the last few seasons, has copped a bit of criticism in the recent past, but Nehra was steadfast in backing the 31-year-old.
.
“Mohammad Siraj is not new to English conditions. He is an experienced campaigner. He has also done well in England and Australia in the past. I will not be surprised if Siraj picks up 25-30 wickets in five Test matches,” he said.
.
The likes of Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna have shown their worth for their respective domestic sides and IPL franchises and Nehra felt they would do a great job if and when the opportunity arises.
.
“The biggest specialty of Arshdeep Singh is that he is very hardworking. In Test cricket, you might have to bowl 18-20 overs in a day and he is ready for it. He can also swing the ball. Despite him not playing Test cricket, he has the skills to succeed.”
.
Talking about Prasidh, “I have seen the way has been bowling and maybe people are not rating him when it comes to the England series, but I'm sure he has the skills to deliver," he said.
.
Despite the concerns about India’s new No. 3, which the country has not had for a while, Nehra said that there's no need to think twice as he expects big things from Sai Sudharsan, calling him a “run-machine.”
.
“Sai Sudharsan is a run machine and he should get a chance on this tour. I see him batting at three in the first Test. I think he will make a lot of impact. Although he is a new player in English conditions at this level, he will still give you a lot of runs.”
