ICC T20 World Cup 2026 |Bumrah brilliance: The bowling genius who keeps rewriting India’s world cup story

Chennai: In a tournament where the reputation of some talented youngsters has taken a beating with questions raised about their temperament and technique, the irrepressible Jasprit Bumrah is yet again walking away with his halo enhanced by millions of lumens.

Playing in his fourth ICC T20 World Cup, the 32-year-old fast bowler has led the Indian attack exceptionally well to show why he’s considered one of the best practitioners — or rather the best — of his craft across formats right now.

Barring his maiden T20 World Cup in 2016 at home where he could bag just four wickets in five matches and conceded 7.65 runs an over, Bumrah has become India’s ‘Mr Dependable’ in the subsequent events with excellent performances.  

In the Covid-hit 2021 edition in the Middle East, by which time the Ahmedabad-born Punjabi had already risen to become India’s numero uno bowler, Bumrah shone by bagging seven wickets in five matches but most importantly his economy was a frugal 5.08. 

Bumrah missed the next edition in Australia owing to a career-threatening back stress fracture and India felt his absence in the semifinal where eventual champions England chased down a target of 169 with 10 wickets and four overs to spare.

Sometimes the value of a player in a team sport is felt more by his absence than presence and that match was a case in point where Jos Buttler and Alex Hales staged an all-out assault. None, including the experienced trio of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and R Ashwin, could contain the damage.

Bumrah was back for the 2024 edition in the Americas and he was one of the main architects of India’s second title triumph. In eight matches, he bagged 15 wickets at a scarcely unbelievable economy rate of 4.17.

The script is no different this World Cup too with Bumrah operating at a different level as compared to the others. In four games so far — he missed the opening clash vs United States of America owing to illness — he’s got 7 wickets at an economy of 5.3.

As the premier bowler, he always opens the attack and more often than not delivers on both the counts — be it picking early wickets and ensuring the rival batters don’t get off to a blazing start in the Power Play where only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

Not just at the beginning but Bumrah is the go-to man at the death for an Indian captain. Unleashing his potent cocktail of unplayable yorkers, off-cutters, faster ones and bouncers, Bumrah rarely gives away boundaries.

There are hardly any loose balls and a batter will have to produce something extraordinary or rely on luck like edges to score a boundary. In essence, Bumrah’s four overs in a game is like a blue chip stock with guaranteed returns irrespective of how volatile the market is.

Take the opening Super Eights game versus South Africa against whom India lost by a whopping 76 runs that has put their semifinal hopes on the edge. He conceded just 15 runs in four overs and bagged three wickets while the next best economy rate by an Indian bowler was 7 (Arshdeep Singh).

Given the advancements in video technology and artificial intelligence, oppositions would have come prepared on how to cope with Bumrah. But every time a batter tries to take him on, the success is just limited to an odd boundary. The end result is the long walk back to the pavilion and the sight of Bumrah smiling at having outfoxed another one. 

How Bumrah is able to deliver game after game, series after series, World Cups after World Cups is beyond belief. At the playground where the best in the world assemble, he remains a mark above. He’s in a league of his own, an extraordinary one at that.
