IPL 2026 | SRH vs RR: Battle of two batting behemoths

Batting fireworks are set to light up the night summer sky of the Mullanpur Stadium (New Chandigarh) as an ammunition-loaded Sunrisers Hyderabad take on a resurgent Rajasthan Royals in a winner-takes-all Eliminator clash on Wednesday.

Between the two sides who only know how to bat one way, which is to come out of the gates swinging at anything and everything, it’ll be the 2016 champions Sunrisers that would be feeling slightly more confident of advancing to Qualifier 2. Not because of their superior 14-9 head-to-head record or having beaten Rajasthan in the last five meetings, it’s their
collective batting might and multiple match winners in the top five that give them a distinct edge.

Right at the top, Sunrisers have Travis Head (393) and Abhishek Sharma (563), possibly two of the most destructive openers in world cricket. Like he has been doing since the 2024 season, the 25-year-old Abhishek has set the tempo often with his dashing batting, scoring at a scorching strike rate of 206.22. 

Head, at the other end, hasn’t necessarily fired on all cylinders this season, managing a modest strike rate of 168.66 but one doesn’t need any reminding of the Australian’s ability to raise his game in big matches.

Then there’s one-drop Ishan Kishan (569), who has continued to dazzle in a career-redefining season by playing clutch knocks whenever the team has needed it, followed by Heinrich Klaasen (606) with the South African powerhouse enjoying his best IPL season so far. If that’s not enough, Nitish Kumar Reddy (264) and Salil Arora (121) played those cameos right at the end. It took a little while for the potent force to click as a unit, but from the moment they’ve done, they have looked irresistible.

Hoping to defuse this collective force on his own is a dynamite called Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old wunderkind has taken his game to a whole different level in his third season, scoring 583 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 232.27 to leave the cricket world spellbound. At an age where he should be worried when the ball is hurled at over 140 kmph, Sooryavanshi has taken apart the best in the business with no fear whatsoever. Even short balls don’t budge him, the southpaw standing and depositing them into the stands comfortably. If Sooryavanshi gets going, then SRH could be in for a serious leather hunt.

The worry for 2008 champions Rajasthan, who started strongly before losing their way and rediscovering it at the end, is that they banked heavily on Sooryavanshi’s magic. His opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal (397) has blown hot and cold, with wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel (458) being the only other consistent batter. Skipper Riyan Parag (272) and his middle-order partner Donovan Ferreira (267) really have to step it up come Wednesday.

SRH also have a slight edge on the bowling front with Eshan Malinga (19) complementing Pat Cummins (8) since the skipper’s return from injury midway through the season. But Rajasthan have Jofra Archer (21), who can cause massive damage on his day. In short, it’s the collective firepower of Sunrisers vs the individual brilliances of Rajasthan.
