T20 World Cup 2026 | From diplomatic firestorms to cricket fever: The Indo-Pak derby is finally on

Colombo: Few games in the history of cricket have witnessed such drama even before it has begun. Even when India and Pakistan fought bloody wars, cricket somehow managed to remain unaffected despite occasional on-field exchanges. Not anymore, though, with politics completely entwined with sports now.  

The marquee T20 World Cup clash -- the biggest money-spinner for the ICC -- between the two arch-rivals in the neutral territory of Colombo looked like a no-starter even until a week ago; the drama surrounding the spectacle was nothing less than a soap opera. 

Literally every episode was played out in the media every day from Pakistan government’s bombshell announcement of boycotting the contest to their cricket board making a U-turn and agreeing to compete on Monday. Diplomatic channels from unseen quarters were opened, including a call from Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to make this match happen at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday.

An India versus Pakistan clash doesn’t need any extra hype, but with plenty of bad blood having flown over the recent months, this one has gained a lot of traction. During the Asia Cup in Dubai last September, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav refused to shake hands with his counterpart Salman Ali Agha that snowballed into a major controversy. After triumphing in the final, India opted not to take the trophy from Asian Cricket Council President Mohsin Naqvi, and the peeved Pakistan’s Interior Minister ensured the Men In Blue didn’t lay their hands on the prize by locking it away.

Against this bitter backdrop, the two arch-rivals clash in what promises to be a close affair despite India’s absolute dominance over Pakistan in the format, having won 13 of the 16 contests, including the last five affairs. In a bid to break the streak, Pakistan are banking on their spin quartet of Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan and talk of the town Usman Tariq.

It’s a move away from convention for a nation that prided itself on producing some of the deadliest fast bowlers in the world, but on the slow tracks of the subcontinent, especially in Sri Lanka, the formula seems to be working well for them. They were instrumental in spanking Australia 3-0 in the preceding series at home, and in the two games of the World Cup, they’ve been on the mark as well.

Despite playing just four international matches, Tariq has become the centre of attraction with his unique ‘pause and deliver’ action. Some former players have branded his action illegal while many have jumped to his defence, saying there is no specific law in cricket that prevents a bowler from stopping before releasing the ball. So expect a lot more chatter come Sunday with all of cricketing world’s spotlight on him. 

Defending champions India may be forced to make some tactical changes given the sluggish nature of the Premadasa surface. Just like Pakistan, they too are blessed with high-quality spinners and could field an extra one at the expense of a pacer. So, all-rounder Hardik Pandya may double up as the second pacer for Jasprit Bumrah with either Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar pairing up with Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy. There’s a possibility of dropping Rinku Singh and playing both Kuldeep and Sundar, considering the latter’s ability with the bat.

India could also be boosted by the return of Abhishek Sharma with skipper Suryakumar Yadav indicating they’ll play the explosive opener who missed the last game against Namibia due to stomach illness. 

A win for either side on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri will guarantee the Super Eights ticket with a game to spare, but the fight will be for a lot more than that.

Highlights - Pitch 
The R Premadasa Stadium pitch, historically, has played slow and it may not be any different on Sunday. Spinners will play the key role and ball may not come on to the bat as nicely as expected, making shot-making tougher. The boundaries are also big, giving spinners further ammunition.
Weather 
The Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology issued a special weather bulletin on Friday regarding the formation of low-pressure area over southeastern Bay of Bengal. So there’s 50-70 percent chance of rain during the game. It remained cloudy throughout Saturday with the skies opening up at 7:15 pm.
