Gowtham, Karn put Ind Red on top

A fine bowling performance from spinners K Gowtham and Karn Sharma put India Red in control against India Green on the second day of their Duleep Trophy encounter here on Friday.

After India Red had posted 323 in their first innings, Karnataka off-spinner Gowtham (5/46) and Uttar Pradesh leg-spinner Karn Sharma (4/39) combined to skittle India Green for just 157 all out in their first knock.

With a lead of 166, Red had reached 19 for one in their second innings at close of play on the second day. Resuming at 232 for five, Red prospered thanks to Dinesh Karthik’s 50 as they added 91 more runs to their overnight total before getting bowled out.

Prashant Chopra (65) was the only Green batsman to reach the half-century mark while Karun Nair contributed 37. Captain Parthiv Patel’s 17 was the only other double digit score in the innings. All three were dismissed by Gowtham.

Brief scores: India Red 323 (P K Panchal 105, S D Chatterjee 52, K D Karthik 50, M Vijay 3/46, Karun Nair 2/17, Mohd Siraj 2/43) and 19/1 vs India Green 157 all out (Prashant Chopra 65, Karun Nair 37, Karn Sharma 4/39, K Gowtham 5/46).
