Padukone says he is in favour of Sports Bill

Last Updated 12 September 2011, 18:45 IST

“I am all in favour of the Bill. I don’t think there will be any sportsperson in the country who will be against the sports bill,” said Prakash on the sidelines of an Olympic Gold Quest function on Monday.

The bill, among other things, sets limits on tenure and age for sports administrators and it has been vehemently opposed by the Indian sports officialdom. It failed to get the cabinet nod earlier this month, making the way forward tougher.

Prakash was a member of the Justice Mukul Mudgal panel that went into the Sports Bill to fine-tune it and he said many people have misunderstood the Bill.

“Lot of people have misunderstood the Bill. They feel it’s all about government control but that is not true. The Bill just puts the guidelines in place to ensure good governance,” he said.

The Bill might be facing an uncertain future at the moment but Prakash said he was still hopeful of a positive turnaround.

“Maybe the Bill might not get passed in my life-time but there is no harm in hoping that it will get passed,” he said.

Sports Minister Ajay Maken was keen to introduce the Bill during the monsoon session of the parliament which ended on September 8.
