JOIN USThe Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Tuesday announced a team of 23 men and 28 women athletes for the Asian Games in Jakarta while stressing that many in the squad will have to undergo confirmatory trials before their presence is secure.
The selection committee of AFI, which met on Saturday, unanimously approved conducting confirmatory trials for those who are not part of the national coaching camps as well as those who failed to meet the Asian Games selection guidelines in Guwahati set in advance.
“The team that will travel to Jakarta will be finalised after confirmatory trials on 15-16 August 2018. Only those athletes who are not in coaching camps will have to give confirmatory trials. However, as announced earlier, the 4x400m relay team will consist of only those athletes who were in the national coaching camps. The athletes who were exempted in advance from attending the final selection trials, such as Neeraj Chopra and Seema Poonia, will not be attending the confirmatory trials,” said AFI president Adille Sumariwalla.
Those who have to give confirmatory trials in women include 800M runner Tintu Luka, quartermiler Nirmala Sheoran, Anu Raghavan, long-jumpers Nayana James and Neena Pinto, discus thrower Sandeep Kumari and javelin thrower Annu Rani. In men, the clearance of Karnataka high jumper B Chetan and shot-putter Naveen Chikara is subject to confirmatory trials.
Chetan's name wasn't there in the preliminary entries and AFI officials were trying to include him. G K Vijayakumari, Jeevan K S and M R Poovamma are the other Karnataka athletes in the squad.
