2 mentally ill men rescued in Dharwad

Two persons who were chained and confined in houses for being mentally challenged by their own family members at Hebballi village in Dharwad taluk, were freed by police on Wednesday.

Later, they were admitted to Dimhans in Dharwad.

The victims have been identified as Balappa Giriyammanavar, 45, a native of Hebballi village and Sambhaji Darekaar, 51.

Police said that both Balappa and Sambhaji were diagnosed with mental problems around 10 to 15 years ago.

Though their families provided them medical treatment, there was no improvement in their condition. Further, the duo started troubling the villagers. Hence, the family members decided to confined them at their houses, police said.

“It is wrong on the part of Balappa and Sambhaji families to keep them in illegal confinement. If family members don’t show love to them. Then how can others show them love?” said DySP Kallappa Handibaga.

He said had directed one of the members from each family to stay with the patients at the Dimhans. A team headed by DySP Kallappa Handibaga rescued the mentally challenged.
