4 hurt in family clash in Belagavi village

Four people suffered serious injuries after two families clashed at Yadravi village in Savadatti taluk of Belagavi district late on Monday night. Police said a petty argument snowballed into the group clash that led to tension in the village.

Police have been deployed in the village and the situation is under control. It all started with a verbal argument among students at Savadatti town on Saturday. The spat turned ugly with men forming groups and attacking each other. One section sided with Nippani family and another with Sirsangi family.

A group of 11 men, led by a youth from Nippani family, attacked the Sirsangi residence around 8.30 pm on Monday. The men threw chilli powder at members of the Sirsangi family and assaulted them. Two persons sustained serious injuries in the attack. Villagers retaliated and assaulted the men but they managed to flee. A few men then attacked the residence of Nippani family and damaged the door. Two men were injured in this attack.

Police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation. Elders of the two families intervened and settled the matter. Shivanand Bhajantari, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Bailhongal subdivision, and Savadatti Tahsildar Basavaraj Melvanki,said the group clash had a “personal motive”. Police detained 17 persons from both the families.

The injured — Dyamappa Munavalli, Shivanappa Sirsangi, Mabusab Dharwad and Fakrusab Nippani — have been admitted to KIMS, Hubballi, for treatment.
