In 1,026 examination centres located at 40 cities, students will be battling to gain entry into the institutes of national importance. According to the JEE 2010 committee, an average of 60,000 to 80,000 students are expected to appear in seven IIT zones in the country for 10,000 seats in 15 IITs.

The number of candidates taking the test from the IIT Madras zone, which includes Karnataka, is 68,500. In the State, IIT-JEE test centres are located at Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore.

Last year, 3,84,977 candidates had attempted the JEE, but only 10,035 had successfully cleared the entrance test. Counselling for General Category students has been slated to be held online this year, giving candidates and authorities relief from crowded campuses during admission. For others like OBCs, the counselling will be held in the campuses to verify certificates and veracity of claims regarding reservation benefits.
