Forest officials have successfully rescued five elephants, including a calf, that had remained stuck in slush at Palangala near Virajpet on Wednesday.

The jumbos, including an eight-month-old calf, had got stuck in the slush of the pond owned by Karineravanda Ayyappa.

The residents objected to the rescue operation by the officials. DCF Christaraju rushed to the spot and promised to fulfill their demands.

A team of officials led by RFO Gopal arrived there, the started a protest, seeking measures to check elephant menace.

Residents said three persons have lost their lives and many have suffered injuries in the menace. The residents and growers are harassed whenever an elephant dies in the region.

The residents allowed the rescue of elephants only after the assurances by the official. Using an earthmover, soil was removed on the banks of the pond to make way for elephants to come out.
