5 meet watery grave in state

Five youths including two from Bengaluru drowned in two separate incidents in Mangaluru and Mysuru.

Three students of Uppinanangady junior college drowned in River Nethravathi near Thottilu Gaya in Uppinangady on Monday night.

According to Uppinangady police, the deceased are Abdul Jaleel Firzan (18), a resident of Kodimbadi, Mohammed Suhaid (17) of Kaukradi and Mohammed Saheer (18) of Biliyooru. All 18 boys in II PU (science batch) in the college had celebrated Firzan’s birthday after class hours on Monday evening by cutting a cake on the banks of the river. While other classmates left for home, Firzan and his two friends went to the river to wash the cake smears on his clothes, before they drowned.

As the three students did not reach home even after 10 pm, parents and relatives launched a search. They then looked for the students near the river. The search operation, which went on till Monday night, did not yield any result. The bodies were fished out on Tuesday morning. All the three students were good in academics, principal Manjunath said.

Two youths from Bengaluru, who had gone for a swim in River Kapila near Nanjangud drowned on Tuesday. The deceased have been identified as Ranjan Tiwari (27) of Uttar Pradesh and Sneha Ashish Chakravarthy (27) of West Bengal. According to sources, both were working for a private company in Bengaluru.
