The driver and the conductor of a KSRTC luxury bus were suspended from service after they were found transporting silver articles worth Rs 15 lakh-in four bags without a passenger.

Driver-cum-conductor N Narayanappa and driver Krishnamurthy H were suspended pending inquiry. The 45 passengers onboard Vijayawada-bound bus continued their journey after the KSRTC authorities arranged for an additional driver and a conductor.

On Thursday, the KSRTC’s inspection team checked Airavata Club Class bus operated between Bengaluru and Vijayawada at 9 pm near Hosakote toll.

The team found that the tickets issued to the passengers were in order. However, when the luggage compartments were checked, four bags were found without luggage tags of KSRTC.

On inquiry, the conductor said the bags were without passenger luggage. When the duty driver and conductor were enquired further, they said the four bags contain 699 silver lamps, weighing 40.950 kg, worth about Rs 15 lakh.

The KSRTC authorities handed over silver lamps to the Commercial Taxes Department. In a release, Commercial Taxes officer R Ranganathappa said the movement of taxable articles without valid documents like E-way bill and tax invoice was an offence liable to tax and penalty. “No person has come forward to claim the ownership of the goods even after three hours. Therefore, it was found appropriate to seize the goods...and take (it) into the custody of the department,” he said.
