Nearly 6,000 students appeared for the Karnataka Management Aptitude Test (KMAT) at 14 centres across the State on Sunday, for admission to MBA and MCA courses in 135 self-financing colleges.

.
A total of 7,366 students had applied for the examination whose results are used for admitting students to nearly 5,000 MBA, 3,500 MCA, and 300 Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) seats, according to M Prakash, Secretary, Karnataka Private Post Graduate Colleges’ Association (KPPGA). As many as 82 colleges are in Bangalore.

Colleges associated with KPPGA use KMAT score to fill 50 per cent of their seats. The remaining seats are filled through the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) which conducts the Postgraduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET) for the purpose. No roaster (reservation of seats for various categories), however, is followed for admission through KMAT.

The tuition fee for MBA and MCA courses varies across colleges which recover the expenditure incurred by them. But they have to give a detailed statement of the fees collected, Prakash explained.

Not less than 4,000 students from outside Karnataka had registered for KMAT. About 20 per cent of the total students, mostly from outside Karnataka, failed to turn up for KMAT. Only sevenpercent of Karnataka students remained absent from the test, Prakash added.

According to the KPPGA official, students from outside Karnataka had responded well this year, although the number of examinees dropped. Nearly 7,700 students had applied for the test in 2011, with 18 per cent remaining absent. “The response from non-Karnataka, however, has been better,” Prakash told Deccan Herald.

Multiple-choice

Students were asked 120 multiple-choice questions which they were required to answer in three hours. The paper had four sections — A, B, C, and D — on mathematical skills, language comprehension, and logical reasoning, and general awareness.

The result will be declared on www.kmatindia.com on August 3. Admissions will start soon thereafter.
