The Home Department has recorded a whopping 678 cases of atrocities against women in 2014 in Mysuru city.

In the home district of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the spike in the number of recorded cases is close to 600 per cent compared to just 11 cases reported in 2013.

The statistics were tabled in the legislative assembly on Tuesday by Home Minister K J George, along with that of the entire State. George was responding to a question by BJP MLA Jagadish Kumar.

However, Mysuru Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M A Salim said he was unaware of such huge numbers being recorded in Mysuru. When contacted by this newspaper, the officer said, “There have been only 42 cases of rape recorded in Mysuru in 2014.”

Bengaluru City has shown a drastic decrease in the number of atrocity cases vis-a-vis the entire State. Bengaluru has reported only 96 cases in 2014 compared to 378 cases in 2013 and 321 cases in 2012.

The other major districts which have thrown up a high number of cases of atrocities against women in 2014 are Mangaluru city (148), Belagavi (251), Bengaluru district (318), Raichur (148), Haveri (403).

Foreigners

In a separate response to BJP MLA Jagadish Kumar, George said the highest number of foreigners residing in the State was in Mysuru city. Statistics suggest that the highest number of expats - 2,607 - reside in Mysuru. The total number of foreign nationals residing in the State is put at 31,175.

George said that till date the government had noted the presence of 164 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, of whom 100 had been deported. There are no reports of how many Pakistanis are staying in Karnataka illegally, he added.

Naxals

Responding to a question on Naxals, George said the government had been trying to dissuade people from joining the left-wing extremists by providing employment to people living in the Naxal-prone regions of the State.

Responding to a question by BJP MLA Sunil Kumar, the Home Minister said the government would provide all possible infrastructure assistance to the districts and region infiltrated by Naxals. “We have also tied up with Tata Institute to provide skill development training to the tribals in these regions.”

Hike wages of Home Guard

Home Minister George  said that the government has sent a proposal to hike the daily wages of Home Guards in the State. Responding to a question raised by Congress MLA Dr Rafeeq Ahmad, George said that a proposal has been sent to the Finance Department for approval.

At present the daily wages to a Home Guard is Rs 300 in Bengaluru and Rs 250 in rest of the State.
