8 killed as bus rams tree in Chitradurga

Eight people were killed and more than 50 injured when the private bus in which they were travelling by hit a roadside tree on a slope at a turning between Madakaripura and Dandinakurubarahatti villages of the taluk, on its way to Challakere Monday afternoon.

While two people, including the driver, were killed on the spot, the others died in a hospital.  
The dead are driver, Manjunath, 30, of Hale Kallahalli village in Chitradurga taluk; Krishnaveni, 40, of Karikere village in Challakere taluk; Papamma, 30, of Kondadevarahatti village of Channagiri taluk in Davangere district; Papanna, 40, of Bacchaboranahatti in Challakere taluk; Pappakka, 45, Ratnamma, 43, Rajashekhar, 35, of Challakere town and a 70-year-old unidentified woman.

The accident occurred when the driver of the overcrowded bus lost control over the vehicle and rammed a tree.

The front portion of the bus was completely damaged and the tree was uprooted. The bus then ran over the tree.

The public rushed many of the children who were severely injured in the accident to  hospital, as their parents could not be identified till evening. Ten people who were seriously injured were admitted to the Davangere hospital.

Police blamed the driver’s negligence for the accident.
