8 undertrials escape from Koppal jail

They cut iron rods using saw

Four of them are from West Bengal, three from the State and one from Uttar Pradesh, it is said. Abid Khan Muktar Khan (Pratapgarh), Asif Iqbal Hussasin (Bagalkot), Bablu Rashid Chonchal (Bijapur) and Marthandaiah Thimanna (Ilkal) had been arrested a few months back in a dacoity case in Gangavathi.

Manzil Sheik, Mohammad Ashraf Sheikh, Meghrib Bayasthi and Mahabeer Sheikh,  all from West Bengal, were arrested in the fake note circulation case.  The jail officials have said that efforts are on to nab the eight undertrials who have escaped.

The undertrials who were in one cell, cut the iron rods of the steel door with a saw. Later, they escaped climbing the wall, police said. They had used bedsheets and the towels given to them as a rope and escaped.

SP Eshwarchandra Vidyasagar addressing the media said a nakabandi has been set up and all the bus stands and railway stations are being thoroughly checked.  Since the jail authorities have all the details regarding the undertrials, the SP has expressed confidence of nabbing them fast. DySP Vijaykumar Dabala, inspector Shivalingaradhya and other officers were present on the occasion.

Staff negligence

Prisons DIG V S Raja has said that the jail staff’s negligence has led to the escape of the undertrials. He was speaking to the media after his visit to the jail in the evening and said it was a planned conspiracy. He said it was not possible to plan the escape through a ventilator which is at a height of 12 feet in just one or two days.

He however, defended his staff, saying that their involvement was ruled out. One other reason could be due to  lack of sufficient staff in the jail, he added. Even the staff that was there have not carried out the search properly, he said.
He promised that proper action will be taken on the incident.
