'AIIMS ready for campus in State'

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has agreed to establish its campus in Karnataka, Minister of State for Medical Education Dr Sharanprakash Patil said on Friday.

According to the minister, the government is ready to provide the required land for the premier institute at four places in the State, including one close to Bengaluru. “We are ready to give it land as soon as it finalises the location. A central team is yet to come and look into the location,” he added.

It may be recalled that former Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan had assured that the AIIMS would be set up in Karnataka, depending on the merit and needs of the people. The AIIMS has been demanding at least 200 acres of land for its campus.

Meanwhile, discussions on implementing the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Determination of Fee) Act, 2006, are still going on, Patil said. “We will introduce the bill, along with amendments, in the upcoming budget session. However, if the legislature doesn’t pass it, the law won’t be enforced in the next academic year,” he said.
