BJP leader murdered in Chikkamagaluru

Last Updated 23 June 2018, 18:29 IST

Unidentified bike-borne assailants stabbed BJP city unit general secretary Uppalli Mohammed Anwar to death at Gowrikaluve layout on Friday night. It is suspected that old rivalry led to the murder.

The incident occurred when Anwar had almost reached home after visiting his friend Raghu. Hearing the cry, Raghu’s wife and children rushed out of the house and saw Anwar lying in a pool of blood. Though Anwar was rushed to the hospital, he breathed his last on reaching there.

The assailants had stabbed the victim at 13 places on his body. There are no CCTV cameras in the vicinity that could have recorded the crime. The investigation is in progress. Speaking to DH, additional superintendent of police Geetha said seven teams had been constituted to nab the culprits. No one has been arrested so far.

Anwar was running a cable TV business in Uppalli. He was in the Gulf in the past. He is survived by his wife Khathija and twin children studying in Class X. Kabeer, brother of Anwar, said that an attempt was made to murder Anwar 10 years ago. Five were convicted in the attempt-to-murder case and said old rivalry led to Anwar’s murder.

Chikkamagaluru MLA C T Ravi said, “Anwar was a honest BJP worker. At the outset, it looks like professional assailants murdered him. The family members suspect that those who had attempted to murder him in the past committed the crime now. The political murders of Kerala and the state’s coastal districts have now entered Chikkamagaluru, which should be considered seriously. The police should not bow to any pressure. They should probe the murder from all angles and the culprits should be arrested immediately.”

Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP and BJP state general secretary Shobha Karandlaje urged the police to arrest the suspects.
