As part of a new campaign strategy, the Congress will deploy some of its national leaders, some with celebrity status, to campaign in Karnataka for the May 12 polls.

Former union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Lok Sabha member Jyotiraditya Scindia, cricketers-turned-politicians Mohammad Azharuddin and Navjot Singh Sidhu are expected to visit Karnataka. Sidhu is currently a minister in the Punjab government. Azharuddin is a former Lok Sabha member. Actors-turned-politicians Kushboo and Nagma are also likely to visit the state, AICC sources said.

The arrival of these leaders will be timed to coincide with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rallies in the state. Already, the AICC communications team led by Randeep S Surjewala has set up shop in Bengaluru to steer the campaign. The party’s poll campaign in Karnataka will be a launch pad for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, an AICC leader said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi will return to Karnataka for the campaign on May 26 and 27, covering Gadag, Haveri, Uttara Kannada and Madikeri, KPCC president G Parameshwara said. “He will resume the campaign on May 3-4 and 8-10. Rahul’s tour will be a mix of interactions, public rallies, roadshows and even temple visits.”
