Last Updated 06 May 2014, 20:03 IST

Unseasonal rains in the last fortnight wreaked maximum havoc in Chikodi and Raibag taluks in the district, with largescale losses to property and human lives.

In Chikodi taluk, heavy unseasonal rains lashed many villages. Roofs of over 370 houses were blown away due to winds.

The losses are said to be over Rs 10 lakh, but officials are yet to assess the exact figures. Losses to horticulture crops were estimated at over Rs 5 lakh.

Three persons were struck dead by lightning in Raibag taluk. Roofs of over 50 houses were blown away.

Villages in Athani taluk too received rains. Roofs of over 20 houses were blown away due to rains accompanied by strong winds at Solapur village in Chikodi taluk last week.

Heavy rain and strong winds uprooted old trees that also damaged power supply lines with many villages and Savadatti town being plunged in darkness during the weekend.

Ramdurg taluk did not receive heavy rain, but two persons were killed as lightning struck at Sidnal and Torangatti villages a fortnight ago.

In March, the district suffered total crop losses of Rs 260 crore due to the rains, which also claimed seven lives.

Rain destroyed agricultural crops on 3286.14 hectares, worth Rs 196 crore.

The district also suffered losses worth Rs 63.69 crore to horticulture crops.
