Commerce courses most sought-after in PU

Last Updated 03 May 2019, 20:22 IST

For the last few years, pre-university colleges are seeing a high demand for commerce courses, forcing the institutes to push the cutoff percentage for the stream further up.

Starting Thursday, PU colleges across the state started distributing applications for the next academic year. In Bengaluru, most colleges saw a beeline of parents waiting to collect one.

In Malleswaram, a queue appeared as early as 8 am in front of the MES PU College, one of the institutes with a high cutoff percentage.

The line only grew longer in the day. At Mount Carmel College, parents gathered to collect application forms.

“We have a common application form for all the courses. More candidates are asking for commerce stream over science. In the science stream, computer science is in huge demand compared to electronics and biology,” a senior official from Christ PU College told DH.

The scenario is more or less the same in all the other colleges.

With commerce in high demand, managements are expected to increase the cutoff percentage compared to last year.

National Education Society president, A H Rama Rao, said: “The cut-off percentage is more likely to increase this year for commerce. Last year, it was 94%, but now it might go up to 95 or 96%.”

Calendar of events

This year, the PU department has fixed a cap of Rs 25 towards the application fee. May 6 will be the last day for colleges to distribute applications and May 8 the last date to collect filled applications.

On May 10, colleges will have to publish the list of candidates whose applications have been accepted by the college. While on May 13, the first list of candidates will be announced. May 16 will be the last date for the candidates to pay the fee.

On May 17, colleges are mandated to publish the second list of candidates and shall collect the fee by May 20. On May 22, the third list will be announced. In the next three days, the cut off percentage of the last candidate has to be displayed on the college premises.
