Cong workers ransack party office in Bellary

Congress workers ransacked the District Congress Committee office here on Friday condemning the party’s decision to field an ‘outsider’ for the Assembly bypoll to Bellary (Rural) constituency.

The workers barged into the party office and smashed windowpanes, damaged furniture and television and tore off the portraits of national leaders. They later staged a protest outside the office raising slogans against State Congress leaders.

The Congress has decided to field N Y Gopalakrishna, the former legislator of Molakalmuru, for the bypoll to Bellary (Rural) Assembly constituency. As many as 21 people - all from Bellary - were aspiring for the ticket.

No interest to campaign

The protesters said that Congress could not win the 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Bellary as it had fielded N Y Hanumanthappa, an outsider. This time the party has been fielding an outsider for the bypoll and local workers won’t have any interest to campaign for him, they said.

“Grassroots workers were hurt by the decision of State leaders. The faction-ridden Congress will be decimated in Karnataka if the leaders do not change their decision. The party could survive in the district if a local person is fielded,” the workers said.
