Court stays Bagalkot pontiff move on ashram

A vacation division bench of the High Court, on Friday, ordered interim stay for pontiff Basavalinga Swamy from elevating himself as chief pontiff (Matadhyaksha) of Sri Gurudeva Brahmananda Ashram in Rabakavi of Bagalkot district.

Hearing a petition filed by another pontiff Abhinava Brahmananda Swamiji, belonging to ashram’s headquarters located in Dharwad, the division bench headed by V Suri Appa Rao issued stay orders for Basavalinga Swamy from ascending himself to the Bagalkot branch of Brahmananda Math.

Basavalinga Swamy was set to elevate himself to the chief pontiff’s post on Saturday, December 29, 2012.

In their submission to the court, advocates for Abhinava Brahmananda Swamiji said, the branch of Brahmananda Ashram in Bagalkot doesn’t have the culture of chief pontiff at all and over the years the management of the branch is being monitored by the headquarters ashram in Dharwad.

“Basavalinga Swamy has violated ashram rules and has made all preparations to elevate himself to the chief pontiff place,” said one of the advocate for the Abhinava Brahmananda Swamiji. Hearing the arguments, the division bench issued stay orders for Basavalinga Swamy acquiring the branch of the ashram in Bagalkot and adjourned the case.
