'Cultural, sports schemes for tribal welfare'

 Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram on Wednesday said that the Centre was planning to launch culture and sports schemes for the development of tribals

.

Speaking to reporters here, Oram said that the scheme on culture would focus on documenting various art forms like songs, dance, plays and also the tribal dialects on the verge of extinction.

Under the sports scheme, incentives will be extended to tribals to improve sports infrastructure, given that people from the community are involved in various sports like archery, kabaddi, football and hockey.

Institutes promoting sports will also be given financial help. The minister said that the Centre was making efforts to improve the literacy rate among tribals.

Addressing the gathering during the fourth and concluding day of the Fifth International Conference and the Gathering of Elders, at Ganapathi Sachidananda Ashram here, the minister said the literacy rate among the tribals was 61.4 pc against the national average of 72.5 pc. To bridge the gap, the government was encouraging education among the tribals under the regular scheme.
